After a surgery gone poorly, compensation might be possible

Residents of Floyd County, Indiana and all of those who live on the Indiana side of the Louisville metro area probably do not list having surgery as one of their favorite activities, and for good reason. Even when all goes well, a person may have to take time off from work to recover from even a minor surgery.

Perhaps more importantly, there is always the risk, even when a doctor is doing a routine procedure, that something will go wrong. In many cases, this is just the risk of surgery, and people who go under the knife have to understand that the result might not be near what they expect or hope for.

In other cases, though, a doctor or another member of the surgery team, either through carelessness or because they did not have the proper information or training, makes a serious error in surgery which leads to an injury or to the patient having a more pronounced illness or recovery time. In the most serious cases, a patient can die because of a doctor's mistake.

In addition to flagrant mistakes like operating on the wrong organ or limb or doing the wrong procedure, surgeons and their times can also have more subtle slips of judgment. For instance, a surgeon could not notice that a person's breathing or pulse is getting abnormal or, by skipping important steps, could accidentally infect someone with a bug that is difficult to treat.

When a New Albany family suspects a surgery went wrong because of a doctor's mistake, they should first consider obtaining the medical records, as they contain important information for a person's case. They should also consider getting assistance from a qualified attorney, such as those experienced professionals who work at our law office.
