Warmer spring weather means more motorcycles on the roads

As the long dark cold days of winter start to appear in our rearview and brighter warmer sunny days are on the horizon as we move toward spring, new hazards may present themselves on the roads. Warmer weather in general, whether it is here in New Albany, Indiana, Louisville, Kentucky or anywhere in the area tends to bring people outdoors. We will see more joggers and cyclers, more kids playing in their yards and more motorcyclists on the roads.

Don't take the winter weather for granted

It is not uncommon as we enter the later stages of winter to take potentially hazardous conditions for granted. When winter weather first hits, we are not yet accustomed to the new hazards on the streets and sidewalks and may take extra precautions and proceed with extra caution in this new environment. But it's now already mid-February and we have been dealing with the cold, ice and snow for months.

What to do if you're injured by someone else in an auto accident

Driving is a risky behavior. While the vast majority of people arrive at their destination safely, every time you drive you incur substantial risk. With good driving practices, you can reduce the chance of an accident. However, no matter how safely you drive, you can still get into an accident with another driver who is negligent. Sometimes, bad weather can result in a collision. Sometimes, the other driver's negligence results from distraction, either from a cellphone, passengers or perhaps a snack. In some cases, the other driver was driving erratically due to being under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Equipment left in surgery patients leads to serious conditions

It sounds like a horrific premise. You or someone you love goes under the knife for surgery, and the knife or some surgical tool is left inside the patient. Unfortunately, it does happen. In fact, according to a report by The Joint Commission, a health care watchdog organization, between 2005 and 2012 there were almost 800 cases reported of surgical equipment left behind in patients' bodies. While most cases led to a patient's extended stay in the hospital, more than a dozen cases were severe. The study found 16 deaths attributed to the problem.

Minnesota state work group wants "granny cams" in nursing homes

It is never an easy decision to move an elderly family member into a nursing home. Unfortunately as they age, many people are left unable to care for themselves. While some families have the ability, support and finances to take care of the elderly during their final years, not all families do, and for older folks who need 24-hour care, a nursing home is one place they may end up.
